Clarkston Varsity Baseball opened OAA Red competition with two wins over Stoney Creek last week.
It started with a 6-2 win last Wednesday and continued with 2-1 win on Friday. The third game in the series was called at the bottom of the third inning with the Wolves up 2-0 and will be continued at a later date.
“The series was very competitive,” said Addison Turk, head coach. “I thought it was very well pitched on both sides. Between Trevor Busyn, Preston Stout and Lucas McKinney it was a couple of well pitched games and defensively we were very solid as well.”
The Wolves scored with one run on the bottom of the third inning in their 2-1 win. They closed down the Cougars quickly in the next two innings.
Stoney Creek tied the score at the top of the seventh inning. They closed in at the top of the eighth with bases loaded and two outs. A hit went into the centerfield and was caught, shutting down the Cougars.
During the bottom of the eighth inning, Brady Krzciok’s walk off double closed the game, 2-1.
McKinney pitched for eight innings with eight strikeouts.
“Everyone in our league you go into the series knowing you are going to have to battle and that’s exactly what we had,” Turk said. “We were just able to make a few more plays, have a few timely hits, and came out on top in both games.”
The Wolves split their double header with Macomb Dakota on Saturday.
They won the first game over the Cougars, 8-6. Carson White pitched for five innings and had six strikeouts.
“The first game I thought went really well,” Turk said. “Carson pitched a really good game and the bats came alive. After not scoring a lot against Stoney Creek, it was nice to score.”
Ryan Drobot hit a 3-run homer off his one hit. Jackson Valentine went 2-for-3 with two doubles. Krzciok went 2-for-4 with one double. Hunter Mars and Logan Brimacombe went 2-for-4 at the bat. Mars had one RBI. Luke Spicer went 2-for-5 at bat with one RBI.
“Spicer had a good day at the plate along with Brady,” Turk said. “Those guys swing the bat well. Hunter had a good day, drove in a run. Jackson had a couple of nice doubles. It was good to see.”
Clarkston lost the second game, 12-2.
“We fell behind early and couldn’t get anything going offensively to try to catch up,” said Turk. “We happened to go against a really good Dakota team. You never want to lose any games, but we will take a split against a good team like that.”
The Wolves’ game against Rochester Adams on Monday was cancelled. They will start the series on Wednesday at Adams, 4 p.m.
“Adams is very tough,” Turk said. “It will be one heck of the series.”
They have a break before they play their next scheduled games.
“It will be a nice break for the boys,” Turk said. “We have been playing a lot of baseball with all the makeup games.”
They head to Oxford on Monday, May 2 for a double header. They finish the 3-game series on Tuesday, May 3 at home, 4 p.m.
