Clarkston Boys Lacrosse Head Coach Brian Kaminskas paused for a moment while the boys celebrated their regional win on May 31.
Which was more exciting for them – a win over Lake Orion or to win the regional crown?
“That’s tough,” he admitted. “I am going to say regional final. I think the icing on the cake is it’s against Lake Orion.”
The cherry on top was they also avenged their regular season loss to the Dragons, 12-9, and they made their statement within the first few minutes of the MHSAA Boys Lacrosse Regional final.
The statement was made in the first 33 seconds when junior Jordon Sommerville scored the first goal of the night. Senior Jake Hodges struck again a minute later for the Wolves.
Clarkston scored again off a goal from sophomore Keagan King with six minutes remaining in the first quarter. Before the quarter closed Lake Orion put two goals on the board, 3-2.
The Dragons tied the game three minutes into the second quarter and took the lead a few minutes later, 4-3.
Sophomore Keelan McKouen scored with 2:21 left in the first half off an assist from senior Matthew Williamson. In the next two minutes the Wolves scored to more goals from senior Nick Atchison and junior Dakota Locher to close the half, 6-4.
“We had a plan,” said Kaminskas. “Our plan was to lock certain guys off at certain times. As they adjusted we just tried to make sure we were trying to stay ahead of it every time.”
The Wolves scored six more goals in the second half from Williamson, Sommerville, McKouen, Atchison and King while keeping Lake Orion to five.
“We came with a game plan and that was to make sure we had a lot of pressure on their attackmen,” Kaminskas said about the Wolves’ long-stick defenders. “They played an exceptional game. They were extremely quick on the back side, extremely physical where they needed to be and great on the ground balls. Long stick middies the same – all of them they were on the money. They played well.”
He added they brought in a new offense and defense in the game.
“We have been working on that for a month. We decided if these guys are ready to go and they are working we will start pulling stuff out as surprises. Around the Bloomfield game we knew these guys were ready to go, they were dialed in.”
The Wolves finished the season to Hartland in the semifinal match up on Saturday, 20-11.
Sommerville, Locher and McKouen each contributed three goals each. King scored one goal while Nolan scored one goal and had one assist. Duncan Misiak, Jake Hodges and Quinn Dobrzelewski each had an assist.
