Brandon Twp.- A 9-year-old Davisburg boy died May 30 following injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
Nicholas Michael Walls was riding a Yamaha TT R-90 dirtbike at about 1:39 p.m. Memorial Day on his grandfather’s property on Victorian Drive when he struck a barbed-wire fence and was ejected from the motorcycle, said Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy Gary Richert, crash investigator.
Nicholas had been following his 12-year-old stepbrother on a 6-foot wide path mown alongside the fence for the purpose of allowing the grandkids to ride around the perimeter of the 12-acre, narrow grassy field.
After the accident, Nicholas walked approximately 320 feet to his grandfather’s home and collapsed from his injuries. Family members began cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the Brandon Fire Department arrived and transported Nicholas to Genesys Regional Medical Center, but the boy was pronounced dead at 2:28 p.m. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the neck.
There were no witnesses to the crash, but speed was not believed to be a factor, based on statements from the stepbrother. No alcohol or drugs were involved and Nicholas was wearing a helmet.
In 18 years as a deputy and three years as a crash investigator, Richert says he has seen 40 or 50 kids injured riding motorbikes or all-terrain vehicles due to inexperience. He called this accident the ‘most severe? he has seen.
