Splish-splash: Students go canoing

Students in Jon Gray’s eighth grade science class at Waldon Middle School recently took a canoeing field trip, thanks in part to a grant from Target.
Eighty-two students, along with eight teacher/chaperones went on the May 24 trip to the Proud Lake Recreation Area in Milford.
Gray said his students are quite familiar with studying the water.
They’ve participated in many projects with the Clinton River Watershed, as well as annually releasing salmon. But, for some, being in a canoe was a brand new experience.
‘I enjoyed the challenge and the surroundings, such as the wildlife and plants,? said first-time canoer Adam Watson, who noted that it took a real team effort to get the canoes going in the right direction.
Among the wildlife seen by the students were swans, turtles, frogs, and even a beaver.
The class even mixed some business in with their fun.
‘We took a test on the water and compared it to the water at the Clinton River,? said Michelle Calcaterra.
