Notes from Battle Creek

Brothers in battle
In the midst of all the state championship celebration, one Dragon baseball player took some time to console a member of the losing team.
Lake Orion sophomore Erik Knoblock went off to find his brother, Farmington senior third baseman Eddie.
‘It was exciting, but I still feel bad for him,? Erik said.
The two brothers remain close even though they now reside in separate locations.
‘We split up my freshman year,? Erik said. ‘I moved (to Lake Orion) and he stayed to finish up high school.?
With the game tied in the seventh inning, the older Knoblock stepped to the plate with a chance to deliver the lead to Farmington. But, with a runner at third and just one out, Eddie struck out.
‘I wanted to win, but part of me wanted him to do well,? the younger Knoblock said.
After the Dragons prevailed, Erik, a reserve third baseman, said he felt like he stole something from his older brother, who was playing in his final game.
‘I know how much he wanted it,? he said.

Notable Quotable
Dragons Coach Andy Schramek on what the two recent championships mean to the athletic department at LOHS:
‘I think Lake Orion is really in its infancy as a bigger school with excellent athletic programs? Maybe these two things do break through, but we’ve got a whole lot of league championships for our school sports and there’s more to come? These things are hard. There are four or five times along the way where we could’ve been on the other side, but they didn’t want to lose? Somebody’s got to win one, and we won one today.?

Blonde is in
The Dragons improved 5-0 with their blonde look, perhaps starting a tradition that will continue in the years to come.
‘Some of them took it a little too far,? Schramek said of the hair. ‘They’ve got some stripes and numbers carved into them, but they’re a team.?
When asked when he would join in on the fun, Schramek said, ‘I’m not going to dye my goatee blonde.?
For Assistant Coach Eric Jennings it was a different story, as he agreed, albeit in a self-proclaimed moment of weakness, to go blonde if the team brought home the championship.
Word on the street is that the procedure took place Saturday night at Ross Tonyan’s graduation party. We’ve been promised photos for next week’s issue, so stay tuned.
