One word that could describe how fans from Richmond and Goodrich who were sitting at the opening game of the season. Due to the recent code violations of the bleachers at Goodrich, fans of both teams entered the same gateway and sat on the same side of the football field. Regardless of the appearance of fans sitting side-by-side, Martian senior Jake Bourassa had one thing on his mind, proving to the referees that he was a man of his word.
‘I told the refs I would run it back,? said Bourassa. ‘I didn’t actually think I would, but I stayed to the sides and just kept running until I scored.?
Bourassa started a trend, by accompaning the first touchdown with three more, ending the game with 140 yards rushing. ‘Our team was really excited after the win. We lost to Richmond the last four years I have been on varsity so to beat them really boosted the team’s confidence, we’re ready to get it done.?
‘It was an excellent effort by the entire team,? said Goodrich Coach Tom Alward. ? We came out fast, they played an excellent game, I’m very proud.? Alward, who has been coaching for 31 years, 16 at Goodrich, not only coaches for the sport he loves, but is joined on the field by fellow coach and son Trevor Alward. ‘Special,? was how Alward described the experience. The Martians will play at home at 7 p.m, Sept. 12 against the Durand Railroaders.
