25 years ago – 1996
“Easter yes, spring no” Youngsters enjoyed the marshmallow drop at Clintonwood Park, sponsored by Independence Township Parks and Recreation. Those who found colored marshmallows received Easter baskets.
“Township moves forward on Sashabaw” When it came to the Sashabaw Corridor, Independence Township official were being proactive, not reactive. The board agreed the next logical and needed step was widening and improving Sashabaw Road.
“Soccer team ‘Never gave up’” The Clarkston Girls Varsity Soccer team was behind 3-1against Oakland Activities Division II foe Brandon after the first half. They came back to win the home game, 4-3. “The kids kept picking themselves up and kept going at them,” said Coach Brian Fitzgerald.

50 years ago – 1971
“Building report” Building in Independence Township in March 1971 increased by over $177,000 compared to March 1970. During March 1971, 34 permits were issued including 13 for houses.
“Clarkston girl wins Navy award” Julie A. McDonnel of Cecilia Ann was paid special recognition by the U.S. Navy for her project “Gibberellins – Plant Hormones” entered in the Cranbrook Institute Science Fair. She was selected for the Navy Science Cruiser Award.
“Around town” Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Loba decided they had enough of old man winter and packed their suitcases and three children. The family headed to Miami, Florida for five days in the 80-degree weather.

75 years ago – 1946
“Spring dance draws huge crowd” A huge gathering of World War I and II veterans, their ladies and friends stepped out on the floor of the high school gym on Saturday night. Circle dances mixed the crowd and created lots of fun. Refreshments were served during intermission.
“The Hilltopper” Mr. Terry spoke to the Economics class on his business – groceries. Buying is the first step in the trend of business. For wise buying one must get good quality and good quality means higher price.
“Clarkston locals” Mr. and Mrs. Roy Gundry left on Sunday morning for California. They expected to take their time and see the sights along the way. They planned to be gone for a month or more.
