Remy Stalcup had a lofty goal when he began his sophomore spring season playing on the Clarkston Everest Collegiate Boys Golf team.
He wanted to finish the season as state champion.
Stalcup’s goal was achieved when he claimed the MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 4 Boys Golf Individual State Championship at the Fortress in Frankenmuth, June 11-12.
He shot two under par for the first day and and even par on the second day, winning by seven strokes.
“I am glad I did it,” he said about achieving his goal.
“It was the one tournament all year I really wanted to win so it means a lot. It means I played really well.”
He added it also meant a great deal to him that he won representing Everest.
“The coaches helped me a lot during the season,” Stalcup said.

Stalcup qualified for the state championship by taking second place during the MHSAA Division 4 Boys Golf Regional 24 at Whitmore Lake.
“I had a rough start,” he said. “I came back the second half and played really well. It made me think I have a good chance (to be state champion.)”
He added it was a good season with his teammates.
“I still had a lot of fun,” he said. “Maybe we didn’t win a lot, but we had a lot of fun as a team. I am looking forward to next year already.”
Just like the rest of student-athletes who compete in spring sports, Stalcup didn’t play the 2020 boys golf season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions that went along with that.
“It affected me a little bit,” he admitted. “But obviously it didn’t affect too much.”
It didn’t affect him too much as Stalcup has been playing golf for pretty much his whole life and remembers starting around 5-years-old.
He explained his dad got him into golf and has been teaching him his whole life.
“I just love playing it,” Stalcup said. “It’s calming. It’s fun, too, when you are playing with your friends.”
Stalcup plans on competing in a lot of tournaments this summer. He competes in the 110th Michigan Amateur Championship in Grand Rapids, which began on Tuesday and ends on Saturday.
Stalcup’s win is back-to-back golf individual state championship titles for Everest.
