A new restaurant opens this week with an eye on customers who savor quality Mexican food at affordable prices.
Agaves (pronounced a-ga-ves) will replace Nickelodeon Bistro Bar & Grill at 10081 Ortonville Road. Owners Pete and Ann Berishaj bought Nickelodeon three years ago and offered a menu including steaks, seafood and several Italian dishes. But a poor economic climate has inspired them to change the menu.
‘We decided to go with a Mexican concept because of affordability,? said Eduardo Mayin, the new general manager of Agaves. ‘People are excited. Mexican food, if it’s done right, is well-accepted and more affordable than steaks. We’re trying to cater to the community.?
Besides affordability, Mayin says the restaurant offers fresh, quality ingredients and good presentation. Appetizers include ‘Ultimate nachos,? and an already popular quesadilla that features sauteed artichokes and mushrooms. Salads offerings include taco salad or two different chicken salads, as well as Agaves guacamole salad. A la carte includes burritos, flautas, enchiladas, and tacos, as well as the ‘Mexican Triple Decker,? and entree offerings include fish and chips, Mexican Pinwheels, a vegetarian casserole and the ‘Collosus Chimichanga.?
Portion sizes are generous, he adds, and nearly all menu items are priced less than $10.
The restaurant, named after the cactus from which tequila is made, plans to add more tequila to the bar selection, as well as Mexican beers, all at lower prices. Pizza will also continue to be offered at the family restaurant.
Several new staffmembers, including a new chef, have been hired and Mayin said they will offer superior service in a fun atmosphere.
‘You won’t have to drive far for good Mexican food,? he said. ‘We appreciate the community’s support in the past and hope to have it in the future.?
