Martian grapplers fall short at home in Tournament of Champions

Goodrich -The defending state champion Martians snagged a second place finish at the Tournament of Champions Dec. 30.
Greenville took first place with a score of 193.5 points. ‘The win was not unexpected by any means,? said Coach Matt Turnbow. ? Greenville is ranked as number one in all divisions this year, and last year they were the Division 2 State Champs.? The second place spot was an achievement for Goodrich, competing against 20 teams statewide. Hesperia took third place with 143.5 points, Swan Valley took fourth place with 133 points, and Dundee took fifth place with 116.5 points.
C.C.Weber (103), Kyle March (171), and Kyler Elsworth (189) finished first in their weight classes. ‘It was a good overall match with very skilled teams,? said March. ‘But it was a very long day and I found myself relaxing as much as possible when I wasn’t warming up or competing in a match.? Mike Lasinski (215) finished second for his weight class. Joe Hopkins (145), and Drew Weil (160), finished third for their weight classes.
Elsworth and Weber are undefeated this season. Elsworth, who is ranked number one for Division 2, still admitted to having tough competition.
‘My toughest match was against Dillion Keern from Greenville,? said Elsworth. ‘He was ranked number one in Division 1.?
Technique and disclipline are among the qualities that Elsworth feels make a good wrestler. ? I think our coaches pushing us hard and keeping us in shape for our matches really have helped our team come as far as we have. Personally, all I try to do is be better than what I was yesterday, even if it’s 1 percent better.?
