State Rep. Andrea Schroeder, 43rd District and vice chair of the Michigan House Financial Services Committee, said Michigan can continue its success with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer if school funding and government transparency are priorities.
“We must make approving a responsible and effective education budget our number one priority this year,” said Schroeder of Independence Township at the governor’s State of the State address, Feb. 12. “I would also like to continue our focus on increased government transparency to regain the trust of Michigan taxpayers.”
The governor called for the state to confront two major crises, its failing roads and infrastructure, and education and skills
“Next month, I will propose a budget for our state,” Whitmer said. “My budget will offer a real solution to fixing our roads and rebuilding our infrastructure. It will give our frontline educators the tools they need to address our literacy crisis. And most of all, it will reflect my unwavering commitment to making Michigan the home for opportunity.”
The governor needs to say more about her plan for road improvements, said Schroeder, a first-term state legislator.
“It’s not enough to talk about what needs to be done,” she said. “We need a strategy for funding and a systematic timeline in order for this goal to be achieved. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Legislature and the governor on specific plans in that vein.”
