For children’s toys and clothes, as well as inexpensive home d’cor, Second Chance Resale in Independence Township may have what you need.
Phil and Teresa Amiot of Holly own and manage Second Chance, which opened in late November.
The 1,850-square-foot building houses many items for purchase, including home d’cor, furniture, kitchen ware, jewelry, toys, books and clothes. Second Chance was so popular, shoppers were even knocking on the door prior to the store’s official opening.
‘We put the sign up and we had people bouncing off the doors,? Phil said.
‘It started with just, ‘Can we come in and look?? and from there it turned into buying things,? Teresa remembered.
Customers have liked what they’ve seen thus far.
‘We’ve had a lot of great comments already on the quality of the merchandise we carry,? Teresa said.
Second Chance’s exterior also helps draw foot traffic to the business.
‘We look more like a boutique than a resale shop,? Teresa said.
The couple decided to open the store due in part to financial struggles facing many in the state.
‘A lot of it had to do with the economy,? Phil said.
‘I figured we could make a little money and help people out.?
Teresa said her previous experience in the business both in helping locate items for others and selling resale items on eBay, will benefit the Amiots in their business.
‘I was always reselling in that way and we just decided we could do better by having a store,? she said.
‘I like being able to recycle it all and seeing all the neat things and meeting all the people in the community,? Teresa added.
The location could not have worked out better for Phil and Teresa.
‘We did research and Clarkston didn’t have a resale (and) consignment shop really at all,? Teresa said.
‘We thought this would be a great spot for it. What we hear is people from here are going all the way to Milford or Union Lake, so a lot (of people) are excited there is finally one near home.?
‘We’re actually catching people’s attention as they’re driving by on their way to other places. They see our sign and pull in,? Phil added.
The couple has been making the business a family affair, as their children Devin, 4, and Emily 3, have been at the store while it is being set up.
‘We’ve got two small kids aged 3 and 4 that we’re trying to have in here at the same time trying to get a business set up. As you can imagine is a handful trying to keep them from breaking things,? Phil said.
‘They both try to help clean and do all that. They want to help with the customers and give them change back,? Teresa added.
