Memorial Day, Monday May 26, 2003, marks the 135th time that Americans have honored their deceased veterans of all wars. Every year since 1868 American citizens have gathered in cemeteries and at memorials across the country to pay solemn tribute to those who faithfully served in the defense of our nation.
Memorial Day observances for Brandon and Groveland Township as well as the village of Ortonville will be marked with a parade and ceremonies which will take place in Ortonville starting at 9:30 a.m.
The parade will begin at the Old Town Hall on the corner of Church and Mill streets, and will march to the Ortonville Cemetery on M-15. The Masonic Lodge will lay wreaths at the World War I and World War II memorials in the village en route to the cemetery. The main ceremonies will be at the Ortonville Cemetery following the parade.
All veterans are invited to participate in the parade and ceremonies. Transportation will be provided for those veterans who are no longer able to complete the route on foot. Volunteers are needed to carry the service flags during the parade. Wearing of uniforms is desired, but not required.
All scout troops/packs and other civic organizations are invited to participate in the parade with marching units.
