Atlas tower work brings emergency communication closer

Atlas Twp. – With a new access road and transmitter building constructed in the township, emergency workers are edging closer to reliable communication.
The road and building were recently built at the site of the WFUM tower near Washburn and Kipp roads, where the Genesee County 911 Consortium will soon co-locate microwave dishes for its new 800 MHz system.
The system, expected to be up by this fall, will allow firefighters and police to communicate, even from inside buildings. Four towers located throughout Genesee County will carry the signal.
A last-minute change in tower locations took place last year, when 911 director Lloyd Fayling learned WFUM was willing to accomodate the system’s equipment requirements on its existing tower.
The arrangement brought plans for a new tower near Gale and Hegel roads to a halt, to the relief of township residents.
‘Now we’re starting to move fast,? Fayling said.
‘The most difficult part was getting the tower locations. It’s starting to get exciting now.?
