Boys of summer swing into spring

Baseball fever is mounting all over the country with Major League Baseball’s opening day looming on Friday. It’s no different in Lake Orion, but residents are rooting for green and white alongside blue and orange.
This year’s Dragon team is the hardest-working team baseball Head Coach Andy Schramek says he’s ever coached.
‘I think we have the chance to be a very good team,? he said, noting that with Andy Mosier and Vinnie Booker, as second-year captains and four-year players, seven other seniors and a junior returning from last year, they’ll have a lot of experience.
‘We have two four-year players who are our leaders. We’ve got good leadership and a lot of different ways we can win games, defensively. We’ve got pitchers who can show people down. We’ll run well,? he said. ‘I like our team.?
Mosier plays catcher and Booker is the team’s centerfielder, so Dragons will enjoy experienced leaders on the in and outfield.
The team ended last season with a 21-11 record and their second league championship title in a row.
‘We were happy with that, but we weren’t really happy how we ended when we lost to Adams in the district finals,? said Schramek, adding that they’ll cross the post-season bridge when they come to it.
‘Right now we’re just trying to make sure we’re ready to play in our tournament starting Monday,? he said last week. ‘We’re trying to build up our pitchers? arm strength so they can go a couple innings. We’ve been spending a lot of time working on our defense. I like where we’re at, but we have to get a lot better.?
Dragons will play alongside 20 other teams in the Oakland County Spring Break Tournament that began Monday. Check out next week’s Review for results.
