Daycare nurtures speedy learners

Emma Smillie’s favorite toy at daycare is the purple My Little Pony, ‘because it’s my favorite color,? she said.
It’s a pretty typical thought for a girl who celebrated her fifth birthday a few weeks ago.
But Emma isn’t a typical five-year-old. Even before her birthday she was able to read at a second grade level.
Since 2006, Emma’s been attending Kids Corner, a daycare facility that focuses on creating environments where young children excel academically and developmentally.
‘Playwork? is a critical aspect of the Kids Corner childcare philosophy. Sue Biddle, the owner and director of Kids Corner, and the facility’s other staff members encourage playwork with open-ended toys and games where children create the rules. Playwork helps them exercise their minds and bodies at the same time.
‘There are no special teachers here,? Biddle said. ‘Our curriculum for a three-year-old is play in an encouraging environment.?
Kids Corner stresses the effectiveness of its team approach to childcare. Together, staff and parents provide consistancy and security so children can be fearless in their learning.
‘This environment has produced a four-year-old who can read at the second grade level at home and school,? Biddle said.
But during conversations with parents, Biddle said she has to warn against sending children to school early.
‘Even if they’re advanced academically, we don’t do school until they’re emotionally ready,? she said.
Kids Corner is located on the corner of Joslyn and Clarkston Roads. Interested parents can call 248-814-9096 for more information.
