There’s going to be all sorts of things running around in Orion this weekend.
Dogs and trucks!
The Dog Days of August and the Big Rig Gig are back.
First on the list is the Big Rig Gig, thundering into Friendship Park on Friday, August 7 from 5 to 9 p.m..
There will be trucks of all sizes. Big trucks, little trucks, mighty movers and dirt diggers from construction sites will be on display.
There is a charge of five dollars per car.
Sponsors of the event include Genisys Credit Union, Hi Hill Lawn Service, ITC Transmission, IBEX Insurance Agency, Stephen Auger and Associates, Pee Wee Patch, Oakland County Parks and Recreation, Sherman Publications and Buffalo Wild Wings.
And when you’re done checking out the trucks, trot on down to the village for a doggone good time.
Despite the cool weather, it’s the dog days of summer again.
The event, on Saturday, August 8, is especially for celebrating local canines. It will include a parade, talent contests, doggie fashion show and the selection of a new Doggie Mayor.
Local businesses will also be having a ‘flea market? sidewalk sale.
Saturday’s doggie events will be held at the south end of Anderson Street, in the grassy area between the Orion Art Center and the fire station.
Pet-related vendor booths will be open from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Hot dogs and other snacks will be available. A non-denominational blessing of the dogs will take place at 11 a.m., followed by the Doggie Parade.
A Doggie Fashion Show and various Talent Contests will follow the parade, from approximately noon to 2 p.m. Winners (largest, smallest, best trick, best singer, best costume, etc.) will receive prizes and/or gift certificates from local business sponsors.
Immediately following the contests, the new Doggie Mayor will be selected by random drawing from the on-site registered canine candidates. Registration forms are available on-site the day of the event. Please bring a $1 donation, or any pet food donation to register your Lake Orion dog for Mayor. All donations will go to a local pet charity.
Also on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., many of the town’s businesses will bring their products to the sidewalks for the annual ‘Flea Market? Sidewalk Sales, offering doggone good deals on a wide range of items and services.
Local residents will also join in village-wide garage sales Thursday through Saturday.

Prizes for the Doggie Talent Contest are provided by: Builders Custom Flooring, Clo-Bear Canine and Feline Foo-Foo Store, Ed’s Broadway Gifts & Costumes, Elements, Lake Orion Pet Centre, Little Monsters, Lucky’s Natural Foods, Turtledove Designs Pet Portrait Studio and Village Trophy Shop.
