Getting your feet wet could be a good way to describe Clarkston’s first boys swim meet of the season, a 110-76 loss at Farmington Hills Harrison on Dec. 7.
This season’s team, a young squad, is still finding its way. Coach Kenwyn Chock was still deciding the best events for the team with its first competition of the season.
‘All the kids did really well,? she said.
‘I really didn’t know who could swim freestyles and sprints,? she added.
‘I have a lot better knowledge of who feels comfortable with what strokes after (that).?
Robert Nelson and Jacob Rush led the way for Clarkston, Rush with a victory in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.58) and Nelson with very close races of his own. Rush’s time was only eight-tenths of a second from qualifying for the county meet in February, Chock said.
Nelson finished second (2:12.23) in the 20-yard individual medley behind Kuni Ueda (2:12.22) from Harrison. Nelson’s time in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.66) was second only to Ueda (1:09.37). Both times qualify Nelson of the county meet, Chock said.
‘It was a pretty competitive meet’we had some competitive races,? Chock said.
The night’s fifth event, the one-meter dive, was the first for Clarkston’s three freshman divers, Jordan Zendejas, Patrick Furlo and Erik Shaw. Zendejas took second place, scoring 155.5, behind Harrison’s Mike Tartaglia (156.9).
The 200-yard medley relay, the first event of the night, was also one of the closest. The team of Rush, Nelson, Phil Voorheis, and Tony Perrino finished second (1:54.40), two-tenths of a second behind Harrison.
The Wolves travel to meet Rochester Adams on Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
