GM looks to the future at Paint Creek

Putting stock in the company’s future, General Motors engineers met for the final time with Paint Creek Elementary second graders Feb. 6.
The team of engineers had visited the students a total of five times over the past two months to teach them about science and engineering.
In the program, the team of engineers covered topics like gravity, energy and heat though hands-on activities, interactive presentations and video. They also explored career opportunities for the young scientists.
‘I love working with young kids,? said Amy, a GM engineer. ‘They’re always so excited to learn and they absorb everything. I’m amazed at how young the kids learn and use science.?
Second grade teacher Krista Adragna loves the program and is especially excited about sharing career opportunities with the students.
‘The kids don’t see engineers everyday like they see teachers or police officers,? Adragna said. ‘These presentations bring out affinities for career options they didn’t know they had, especially for the girls.?
Adragna says that the program brings science to life for her students and allows them to make connections between school and real life.
Dean, a second grader, said of all the new science he learned, the most exciting session was the one on gravity.
‘My favorite was the egg drop because my team’s egg didn’t break,? he said.
Nick, another second grade student, said he couldn’t pick a favorite session.
‘I can’t really say any were good in particular,? he said. ‘I really liked all of it.?
