GM seeks huge tax break

Now that General Motors has announced they’re sticking around Orion to keep building cars, it’s time to get down to the nitty grit of the deal that kept them here.
The automaker will appear before the Orion Township Board of Trustees at their regular meeting on Monday, July 20 at 7:30 to hear from you, the public, about the proposed 100-percent tax abatement on new personal property.
The generous 25-year abatement that could potentially be worth around $100 million was cited as one of the reasons GM chose the Orion plant to build a new small car.
The Orion Assembly Plant beat out plants in Wisconsin and Tennessee in a competition that began when GM entered bankruptcy at the beginning of June.
‘We are extremely pleased to announce we have set [this] public hearing,? Gibb said. ‘They are going to make that plant a very viable and functioning facility here in Orion Township.?
Gibb said GM will invest an estimated $700 million in the plant as it retools its line for the new vehicle.
‘That type of investment means the facility will be long term in Orion,? Gibb said.
Before the township can adopt the act, a public hearing must be held.
‘We encourage you to come out and hear more as the General Motors saga plays out,? Gibb said.
Oral and written public comment is welcome. If you can’t make the meeting, submit written comments to Clerk Penny Shults, 2525 Joslyn Road. Any questions, call 248-391-0304, ext. 104.
