Group pushes education for orderly growth

After a Feb. 23 meeting with almost 300 Independence Township residents in attendance, Citizens for Organized Growth has scheduled a workshop session for March 9 at 7 p.m. in the Clarkston High School auditorium.
‘With the response we received at the meeting, I think we’re going to need the space once again,? said Neil Wallace, one of the core members of COG and an Independence Township resident.
Wallace said anyone can attend the workshop to learn about the structure of township government and the roles of the master plan, zoning ordinances, Sashabaw Road overlay district, PUD zoning and the Vision 20/20 plan.
‘All of these are important documents,? said Wallace. ‘They describe what we want to happen in this community in the future.?
At the Feb. 23 meeting, COG announced the creation of the group’s first website: www.cogmi.org. Constructed by Mike Demorest, the site contains information on the group, COG’s purpose, the way COG functions, updated news (such as current newspaper articles and recent township activities) and the current status of any possible or proposed regional, ‘big box? developments.
‘A core group of (COG members) were meeting to prepare for the Feb. 23 meeting when someone mentioned that we should have a website,? explained Wallace. ‘Mike said he could put one together.
‘The site was finished on Sunday. I was amazed by what he put together so quickly. It looks great,? Wallace added.
Those core individuals leading the COG effort carried an overriding theme of support throughout the Feb. 23 evening.
‘It’s so important that we support our elected officials,? said Joe Glaser. ‘This community is way too special. This affects everybody in all four of the farthest corners.?
‘I now appreciate the importance of the board in relation to this proposal,? said Karen Koval. Koval explained how she has attended two different township board meetings and been amazed at the complex issues at hand.
‘The key word in this is ‘orderly.? We’re not opposed to business. We’re not opposed to growth,? said Bob Ferer. ‘We simply want ‘orderly? change.?
‘We must work together let our township officials know we are standing behind them,? said Wallace during the meeting. ‘We must work together to control the development tsunami heading down I-75.
‘There is very, very real strength in numbers.?
Members of COG will be participating in the local cable access show ‘Perspectives? on March 16 and 23.
