It was inspiring to attend the 32nd Clarkston Community Awards a few weeks ago with the people who were honored as well as why they were honored.
A few of the honorees, I knew from covering things throughout the community over the last nine years, like Addison Gale, a Clarkston High School student who pops up in the newspaper every once in a while. Gale, honored for Youth of the Year, began a project called “The Overlooked” to help teenagers with mental illness.
She saw a need. She had the passion and drive to fulfill the need and do something about it. In turn she probably changed a lot of lives in a huge positive way.
Michele Robinson, honored for Business Person of the Year, I have seen and talked to a few times with events at Lighthouse of Oakland County – Clarkston. I usually talk to her at the end of summer/ beginning of the school year when the Clarkston Football Program holds their annual Rush for Food event, collecting food for Lighthouse. Over the last few years when the school supplies hit the shelves I call because I know they are collecting and will be filling backpacks for students in need.
The last person is Dennis Hughes, Volunteer of the Year, I have seen at events for Clarkston High School’s award-winning Team RUSH 27 Robotics team.
For 21 years he has volunteered countless hours and his answer why is inspiring – it’s all about the students.
“As soon as one graduates another one comes in more interested and excited to learn. I just cannot quit because I don’t want them to miss out on this opportunity.”
Congratulations to all of the honorees! They started with something small and it grew. You can, too! You don’t have to wait until the next Impact Weekend – you can do something right now. There are volunteer opportunities or just helping a neighbor with lawn care.
I will leave you with the words from Geoff Black, Worship Arts Pastor at Clarkston Community Church, as he said it best.
“It’s the small things we do each and every day that make a big difference,” he shared. “I encourage everyone to dream big dreams. Think about ways you can help out and have the courage to do so.”
