James Arthur “Skip” Peloquin, a devoted husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, and proud Marine, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2024, at the age of 77. Born on December 30, 1946, Skip dedicated his life to service, family, and the community he loved.
A proud and decorated Marine, Skip served his country honorably during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he continued to serve the public as a deputy with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department for 27 years, serving with unwavering dedication and honor. His exemplary service resulted in many awards over the years, and Skip made history as the first Oakland County Deputy to have his badge number retired, reflecting his profound dedication to law enforcement and his community. After retiring, his commitment to public service led him back to work for an additional 8 years as a court officer.
Skip was a dedicated member of several veteran, fraternal, and community organizations, finding fellowship and purpose through his involvement. He was known for his love of law enforcement and the brotherhood he found among his colleagues. He was a storyteller at heart, sharing captivating tales of “back in the day,” drawing laughs and inspiration from all who listened. His generosity knew no bounds, extending kindness and support to family, friends, and even strangers in need. Skip’s loyalty to those he loved was unmatched, and his passion for his work was evident to all who knew him.
Skip is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Peloquin, whom he lovingly called “his rock.” He also leaves behind his daughter, Diann Brown; his son-in-law, Robert “Bob” Anderson; his granddaughter, Samantha (Sean) Morrison; his grandson, Robert “R.J.” Anderson; and his great-grandson, Mason White. He is also survived by many, many friends and colleagues who loved him. To his grandchildren, he was affectionately known as “Pekiwin” or simply “Pek,” a title he cherished deeply. His faithful golden doodle, Max, will miss him greatly.
A celebration of Skip’s life will be held at The Clarkston Eagles on Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. Friends and family are encouraged to stay and watch the 1 p.m. Lions game afterward, just as Skip would have wanted. He sure loved catching a good game at the Eagles, surrounded by friends. A service with military honors will be held on Friday, May 30, 2025 at the Great Lakes National Cemetery at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. Some of Skip’s favorite causes included the Wounded Warrior Project, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Make-A-Wish.
Skip lived a life full of love, service, and unwavering dedication to those around him. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy of generosity, loyalty, and service will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
