Families looking to add a bit of a kick to the quality time they spend together do have an option’martial arts at the CERC.
According to Master Leo Mayer, head of the American Martial Arts Academy (AMAA), there’s no better way to spend time with your kids than studying the 4,000-year-old Korean form of Dan Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do.
‘It provides kids with discipline and it’s a great activity for the family,? he said.
The martial arts class has been offered through the Lake Orion Schools? community education programs for more than two decades, according to Mayer.
‘Our program is unique in that we offer a parent-child combination,? said John Gahrs, head instructor.
Michael Mannino, an instructor whose son also participates, said it’s a great way to instill in kids a sense of fitness, respect, confidence, and generosity in a structured environment.
‘It’s three-hours quality time with your kids,? he said. ‘It’s a good way for them to grow up.?
While parents are encouraged to suit up alongside their children, it is not mandatory.
Mother Jacklelyn De Jesus had no plans of signing up herself, but the Lake Orion resident thought it was a good idea for her nine-year-old son, Edward Lasseigne.
‘It’s a good physical activity and helps keep them out of trouble,? said De Jesus.
The fall session is still open. There is $125 registration fee for the 15-week course. Uniforms are also available for $35. The next class is Monday, Sept. 29 from 6:15-7:30 p.m. at the CERC, located at 455 E. Scripps Road.
