Five year’s into a varsity program and the Oxford golf team is ready to take control and climb to the top of the Flint Metro League.
“We have some experience this year,” said coach Terry Kelly. “We’re really shooting for next year, but this should be a watershed experience for the team. Hopefully we’ll do it this season.”
Last year the team’s record stood 7-3 in dual meets, third in the Flint Metro League and finishing in the middle or just above at tournaments.
“I think the girls have improved,” said Kelly. “I don’t think we’ll have any girls who will shoot under 40 consistently, but we definitely do have some that can do it occassionally.”
This season’s varsity team includes senior Jacqui Grace, juniors Jackie Maher and Kate Hubbard, and sophomores Beth Hubbard and Emily Jacobsen. Kelly said junior varsity players are still trying out for the final varsity position.
The team hopes to win the Flint Metro League championship this year, win over half of their dual meets and place in regional competition so they can qualify for state. According to Kelly, the Lady Cats biggest strength will be their steadiness.
“We have five girls who average about 50,” he said.
Team members plan to work hard on their short games before they go against their toughest opponent, Linden.
The team’s first meet is tomorrow (Thursday) against Lutheran North, course conditions permitting.
