Lady Wildcats end a difficult season

The Varsity Ladies Basketball team completed a slow season with a 51-45 loss to Lapeer East in district competition at Waterford-Kettering.
“This just was not one of our best games,” said coach Becky Graves.
High scorer for the match up was Megan Stumph with 15 points. Following her lead were teammates Casey Cookingham and Jenni Rhodes each with eight. Cookingham was also a leader with 10 rebounds and Ally Zonsius came through with six assists.
The Lady Cats went into district competition with a 48-37 loss to East the week before, making the team’s record 8-12 overall and 5-7 in the league. Sitting high for the Wildcats were Stumph with 10 points and five rebounds, Mykala Salquist with nine points and 16 rebounds, Denise Spratley with seven points and Zonsius with five assists.
The varsity cagers are saying good-bye to six seniors this year: Megan Bono, Denise Spratley, Shannon Gerbe, Jenni Rhodes, Kaitlyn Cookingham and Kate Bray.
“They are a group of nice girls,” said Graves. “I like them on and off the court. They brought a lot of individuality to the team.”
Graves is looking towards her underclassmen to begin pulling the team up over the next year. She expects that with a little more experience under their belts, the six returning juniors, including soon-to-be three year varsity members Stumph, and Zonsius, and one returning sophomore, Mykala Salquist, will once again pull Oxford to the top.
As for this season, Graves said the team just didn’t grow or change much.
“We pretty much played the same at the end of the season as in the beginning,” she said. “The girls improved in some areas, but there were others that still needed a lot of work and we just ran out of time, so we’ll start again and hit it next year.”
