The boys varsity bowling team beat out 27 other teams to take the Oakland County Championship title last month.
They traveled to Wonderland Lanes in Commerce Township Jan. 24 and 25 to compete.
The team qualified a cool 13 out of the top 16 teams to move on to the final round.
They took 3,706 points – a far cry from top qualifier South Lyon’s 4,107. But Head Coach Kevin Crowther says the team heated up just in time.
‘After qualifying, anything can happen,? he said. ‘When it came to the championship round, we caught fire.?
The Dragons beat Milford in the first round, 431-392. Milford had the number four spot in the qualifying round.
And they beat Holly, number five, in the second round, 426-424.
In round three, the boys took Waterford Kettering, 439-421.
For the title, the Dragons faced another unlikely finalist, Waterford Mott, who placed 10th in the qualifiers. Dragons took the title with their highest score of the tournament, 442-420.
‘We tend to bowl better when the pressure’s on,? Crowther said.
He noted that the team’s biggest obstacle is attitude, but when they’re focused–watch out.
Later this month, the Dragons will compete in a regional tournament and hopefully in the state tournament in March.
‘Our goal is to qualify for states and be in the top three in our region,? said Crowther.
