15 years ago – 2001
“Wall-to-wall-kids” Clarkston Community Schools officials brought forth a master plan as they worked to reduce overcrowding in the schools. The most urgent issue was the overcrowding was at the high school with 2,275 students in a building meant for 2,000.
“Local priest heads to Salt Lake City” Reverend Robert Humitz, a pastor of St. Daniel’s Catholic Church, was one of the 40 chaplains to be selected to minister at the Olympics Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
“Grapplers win Jenison Invite” The Clarkston Varsity Wrestling team was off to a solid start after winning their first meet of the season. The Wolves won four of their five team matchups to win the Jenison Invite in Hudsonville.
25 years ago – 1991
“Grinch foiled” Someone almost kept Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus from coming to Clarkston when someone took the battery out of the wagon they were going to use to get to town. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department came to the rescue by providing a pair of squad cars to escort the unit wagon to town.
“Christmas choices” Cari Guttenburg of Independence Township was choosing the perfect gift during at the Holiday Shoppe at North Sashabaw Elementary. The shop was provided to help youngsters do their Christmas shopping, gifts ranged from 25 cents to $6.
“Fare for a feast” Michael Zielinski, Melissa Marbel and Nicholas Fioroni created pumpkin pies at Clarkston Co-op Preschool as preparation for a Thanksgiving feast at the Clarkston United Methodist Church.
50 years ago – 1966
“Celebrates 92nd birthday” Guy A. Walter, considered one of Clarkston’s leading citizens, celebrated his 92nd birthday with a small family dinner. Walter enjoyed morning walks from his home on Main Street to the business center of the village.
“Wolves race to two wins” The Clarkston Boys Varsity Basketball defeated West Bloomfield, 73-53, and Rochester, 77-70, in back to back games. Dan Fife led in both games with 32 points against West Bloomfield and 34 against Rochester.
“Round the town” Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Cress were guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Downey at their home on M-15 for a brunch and cards.
