McCain makes unannounced stop at plant

Presidential candidate Sen. John McCain made a surprise visit to Lake Orion’s General Motors assembly plant Wednesday morning.
With Wall Street awash in bailouts and only a little more than a month until the election in which Michigan will be a hotly contested state, the prepared statements he delivered to workers focused on the economy.
‘It’s great to be here today with the assembly workers of this GM plant. I’m here to send a message to Washington and Wall Street:’We are not going to leave the workers here in Michigan hung out to dry while we give billions in taxpayer dollars to Wall Street.’It is time to get our auto industry back on its feet. It’s time for a new generation of cars and for loans to build the facilities that will make them,? McCain’s statement said.
He added: ‘I am going to lead our nation to energy independence with new technologies here in Michigan and additional drilling here at home.’As President, I am going to fight for the people and workers of Michigan, and bring this economy back.?
According to the plant’s Communications Manager Becki Akers Hopson, GM officials were excited to have a presidential candidate focus on the work being done at Orion Assembly.
‘GM welcomes the opportunity for candidates to learn more about the industry and GM’s plans to succeed and win in a highly competitive global market,? Hopson said.
‘The next President’s regulatory and legislative initiatives on such critical issues as research and development, fuel economy and trade can have a positive impact on strengthening the U. S. domestic auto industry and manufacturing sector,? she added.
