The push to the top continues as the Oxford varsity volleyball team wins two away and one at home this past week.
On Thursday the Lady Cats showed Linden just how sharp their claws really are. The netters won the night 15-6, 15-6.
“Linden did a pretty good job of mixing up their offense and digging up our big hitters, but didn’t quite prove to be enough defense for our overpowering middles,” said assistant coach Danielle Gerbe.
High stats for the night were: Caryn Inman with six service points, four blocks and 21 kills; Brandi Parker with 14 service points, three aces, 33 assists and her always high 66 for 69 setting average; Shannon Gerbe with five service points, one ace and 14 digs; Lindsey Tarrant with four kills, eight digs and three assists; and Jacqui Ludeman with two blocks, 10 kills and 100 percent passing.
“Jacqui had one of the strongest passing days and defensive days that I’ve seen her play,” said Gerbe. “She’s improved a lot in that area in the last couple of weeks. I’m very proud of her.”
The Lady Cats continued their rise to the top by winning the Hastings Tournament this past Saturday. The girls went undefeated beating Union City, Coldwater, Olivet, Delton and Grand Ledge.
The highlight match-up for the day was Oxford versus Coldwater, who beat the Lady netters last year in the finals.
The Oxford volleyball team pulled ahead in the first match to win a tough 15-12. The Cardinals then came back with a vengeance in the second match.
“They shut us down offensively in the second game and we stopped mixing it up,” explained Gerbe, “so we ended up losing 12-15.”
But the Wildcats didn’t quit there. The ladies came back pumped for the third game and won 15-6 in rally.
The team then took things to another level by drowning Lapeer West 15-4 and 15-3. High hitters for the night included Inman with eight kills, Ludeman with 12 kills, Parker with three kills and four service points, Breanne Gerbe with eight service points, Shannon Gerbe with two service points and Tarrant with 10 service points.
The varsity volleyball team’s record now stands 40-2-1 overall and 11-0 in the Flint Metro League.
The Lady Cats compete again this Saturday at an Imlay City Invitational as they gear up to host districts on Friday, February 28.
