The Oxford netters celebrated their 24th straight win in the Flint Metro League last night in a victory over Holly. The varsity team defeated the Broncos 15-7, 15-7 for an overall season record of 32-2-1 and a league record of 9-0.
Leading the way in service points were Shannon Gerbe with seven and Breanne Gerbe with 12. Breanne held a 100 percent serve reception for the night. The pair also led the way in digs.
Offensively, Jacqui Ludeman and Caryn Inman followed Brandi Parker’s 41 for 42 setting average and 20 assists with a combined total of 23 kills. Ludeman also had three blocks and Inman had five blocks and five digs. Parker contributed four service points during the night.
A highlight player for the match-up was Ali Belmonte who entered the game after being off with a back injury the past couple of weeks. She supported the team with 100 percent serve reception and some important service points.
Ultimately, the Lady Wildcats were able to set up an offensive front the Bronchos just couldn’t break.
“I just want to add a thanks to the fans at our last game for doing the best job Oxford has seen all year,” said assistant coach Danielle Gerbe. “Thanks for your respectful cooperation and classy enthusiasm for the evening.”
Earlier in the week, the Lady Wildcats once again scored well against Fenton.
Racking up the service points were Shannon Gerbe with nine, Parker with nine, Alivia Stalnaker with four and Lindsey Tarrant with four.
Once again Parker held her incredible 100 percent setting average while adding 26 assists to the counts. Also coming forward in the attack were Inman with 11 kills, Ludeman with 10 and Stalnaker with 7.
Working hard defensively were Shannon Gerbe with 13 digs, Breanne Gerbe with nine, Parker with nine, Tarrant with eight, Inman with seven and Stalnaker with six.
The girls compete tomorrow against the Eagles at Linden.
“This should be a good game,” said Gerbe, “considering they had strong defense against us last time. We’re looking forward to playing them.”
The team is also looking ahead to Saturday’s tournament at Hastings where they have a few “points” to make. Gerbe stated that last year the team lost in the finals, so the girls are anxious to change that record this year and prove themselves yet one more time.
