After the Jan. 8 meeting with high school principal candidate Sophia Lafayette, many parents voiced their opinion on the selection committee and superintendent’s recommendation.
And the majority of opinions were positive.
What follows are three parents? comments on Lafayette.
~ Megan Collier
Birgit Mcquiston
‘I do feel like the [hiring] process worked. However, I understand the community’s concern. They’ve seen a lot of inconsistencies come forth from the administration, and so they’ve got lots of questions. …In my opinion, she’s an excellent candidate.?
(Mcquiston served on the principal search committee as a parent representative. She has two children in the district: one at LOHS and another in middle school.)
George Edwards
‘The bottom line is, if 14 people who are qualified think she’s the best candidate, then obviously she’s the best candidate, whether we think she is or not. I absolutely support recommendation.?
(Edwards has four children, two who have graduated from LOHS and two still attending schools in the district.)
Patti Carpenter
‘My overall impression is that I think Sophia is an excellent candidate. Despite the pact that she doesn’t have any on hand principal experience she has all of the other qualities I think you would need. She has real core values as far as instruction in the classroom. I think she’ll be an excellent principal.?
(Carpenter has had children in the district for 15 years. One will graduate this year, one is a sophomore and another is in fourth grade.)
