When Jim and Lisa Cummins moved here in 1997, Lisa took a stroll downtown.
One of the first things she found was the Orion Art Center.
‘I went in and checked the place out,? she said. ‘Reggie [Harrison, the center’s director] welcomed me with big, open arms.?
Since then, Lisa, a former ballet dancer and dabbler in other arts, has not only taken classes at the center, but has also volunteered her time.
And together her husband of 27 years, Jim, the Cummins have opened their large home on the lake to various events like wine and beer tastings.
‘I love the arts, stage plays and symphonies,? Lisa said. ‘They bring out a lot of emotions while healing people. You have to love the arts.?
Lisa has been the art center’s president of the board since October.
Now, the Orion Art Center is giving something back to the Cummins.
They will be honored as the 2009 Patrons of the Arts at the 20th Annual Snowflake Ball on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Addison Oaks Ballroom in Leonard.
‘They’re very generous and sharing,? Harrison said.
An award will also be given out at the Snowflake Ball ‘Speakeasy? to Doris Stauber, a founding member of the Orion Art Center who is being recognized as Artist of the Year. Stauber was featured in last week’s Review.
Tickets for the ball are $95 per person. All the proceeds benefit the Orion Art Center. The ball will feature art demonstrations, live music, a gourmet dinner, premium bar, silent and live auctions and, according to Harrison, a whole lot more.
‘There are many surprises in store,? she said.
Some of the items up for bid include signed sports jerseys and balls, theater tickets, art, jewelry, paintings, photography and gift certificates. Live music will be provided by the Jump Swing Band. For more information about the ball or programs available at the center, visit www.orionartcenter.org. To reserve tickets, call 248-693-4986 by Feb. 2.
‘It’s great to see a bunch of people come together to put on such a fun event,? Lisa said.
