Residents rue loss of downtown trees

Trees cleared from a corner lot in downtown Clarkston left many wondering what is happening on the property.
‘It’s very sad to see this natural area with a lot of trees just disappear,? said resident David Yackell in an email to Clarkston Mayor Joe Luginski regarding ‘the decimation of the land? at the corner.
Judy Palmgren was also shocked by the change.
‘My heart just dropped when I drove by and saw all those beautiful old trees were gone,? she said. ‘Who knows what is going on, but all those trees and that corner lot is part of the legacy of downtown. Whatever happens, they will change the dynamics of Clarkston.”
The area in the southeast corner of Main Street and Waldon Road has been cleared of trees and is an eyesore, Yackell said.
Luginski told Yackell the property is not owned by the city, and the owners were clearing the land and not providing much information.
Ed Adler, a local investor who owns the land, said he decided to clean up the property after he received a request by the city last summer.
‘I received a letter from the city letting me know they were getting complaints about the lot,” Adler said. ‘I contracted with a company last year to do the work. They are just getting to it. Most of the trees on the lot were no good and dead.?
The lot is not for sale, he said, but he is contemplating ideas to develop the property in the future.
“You never know what the future could bring, and plans for the lot may change,” he said.
