As flowers often represent a transition from spring to summer, a group of local Girl Scouts marked their own advancement in scouting by planting flowers at Depot Park.
Junior Girl Scout Troop 1291 completed their project amid the cold and rain on May 12, earning Bronze Awards and making the transition towards Cadette Girl Scouts.
‘It’s the highest award they can earn as Junior Girl Scouts,? said Troop Leader Sandy Turner. ‘After tonight they will be Cadette Girl Scouts.?
As part of the project, the 13 girls from Sashabaw Middle School, most of who have been in the troop since first grade, spent about 20 hours total planning and completing the project. The work added flowers and refurbished several parts of Depot Park including the Rudy Schwartz Garden.
‘It’s fun. The planting, the weeding, the helping out around is just nice to do,? said 11-year-old Aubrey Kenny.
The girls? work took a little extra grit and determination according to Turner, who said just about every activity completed by this group was marred by rain over the past year.
‘It’s always raining for our outings, so we’ve realized we can’t cancel,? said Turner. ‘It fits in with our motto of ‘Figure it out, don’t freak out.?
‘We normally deal with it, so we’re used to dealing with the rain,? said 12-year-old Cristina Ballough as she planted a purple hyacinth.
‘It’s been interesting to listen to their mind change as they’ve got different opportunities (to volunteer),? added Turner.
Following the soggy work, the girls held a ceremony marking their advancement from Junior Girl Scouts (ages 9 ? 11) to Cadette Girl Scouts (ages 12 ? 14).
