The Oxford varsity soccer team went 0-3 this past week on the field.
On May 7, the Lady Cats lost to Fenton 0-3. Oxford only had nine shots on goal to Fenton’s 18.
‘By the end of the game we had only one alternate,? said head coach Val Cerato.
The team was plagued with injuries for the night. Goalie Nicole Carter was out the second half of the game and had to replaced by Jolene Patterson, while Lauren Hicks, who has broken her foot a couple times, was in a lot of pain by the end of the game and had to sit out.
Highlight player for the match-up was Nicole Bennett.
‘She’s been working hard and really improved her game overall,? said Cerato.
On May 9, Oxford lost to Lapeer West 1-3. Sam Marshall, who was leading scorer for the team last year, brought in the goal during the second half after a pass from Cortney Vassal.
Oxford had 24 shots on goal, while West only had 19.
Once again the Lady Cats brought up JV player Jenna Nelson to help on the field.
On May 12 the Lady Cats took a hard 0-4 from Lapeer East. Goalie Carter saw yet another tough night on the field.
‘Carter was having a rough time,? said Cerato. ‘This day was just kind of a down one for her.? Lapeer East had only 10 shots on goal, but scored with four of them. Oxford had a total of 13 shots.
‘In the second half I felt we were just not attacking the ball,? explained Cerato.
The highlight player for the game was mid-fielder Sam Marshall. Cerato said she did a great job rotating her focus by helping the defense in the back and then moving forward to take some shots on goal.
‘Overall we’re finally starting to take some shots and go on the attack,? said Cerato. ‘I haven’t given up hope yet for this season.?
Oxford hits the field again tonight (Wednesday) against Brandon and get a second shot at Lapeer West on Friday. Both match-ups are home.
