Students support troops with care packages

Goodrich Schools-Students are being asked to bring in packaged candy, new decks of playing cards, new puzzle books, writing paper and envelopes and toiletry items, just to name a few.
For the past couple of months, the theme that rings compassion in ears everywhere is ‘Support our troops.?
Donations are being received and sent to the troops in Iraq and other locations they may be stationed in. Oaktree Elementary has taken the initiative to show their support in Operation Appreciation. Once the war started, the Red Cross started this program for everyone involved in the crisis.
The American Red Cross, Genesee-Lapeer Chapter is collecting donations from numerous businesses, churches, homes, and schools. Oaktree Elementary has joined in the program and has seen the community’s concern.
‘We have many students and families that have contributed to the service. We like to answer the students? questions if they come up, but we are trying to focus on the support aspect of this war,? said Principal Kim Hart.
Public relations and special events coordinator, Rabekah Majeske of the American Red Cross said, ‘The public has been so overwhelming in showing their support that we have actually had to stop sending packages for the next few months. We have about 300 boxes of all different types of things that we still have to sort through.?
The boxes of items are sent to Red Cross workers in the United States, then to workers in Iraq, and many other locations. Once they are received the Red Cross sets up a store type environment where military personnel can choose what they need or want. All the items are free to the service men and women.
