Raymond Michael Huffmaster of Rochester Hills was arraigned Monday, April 20 for filing false police report charges.
According to the Lake Orion Police Department, Huffmaster left a Lake Orion bar and crashed his luxury car on Orion Road near Snell. He was then assisted from the crash and returned to the bar where he reported his car, wallet and keys stolen.
The police recieved Huffmaster’s call around 2:30 a.m., Jan. 30, and sent word to other stations about the defendant’s black Infiniti 3x 350. Oakland Township Sheriff Deputies reported back, saying they found the vehicle wrapped around a tree.
‘There were certain facts about the case that peaked our curiosity on the accident,? said Police Chief Jerry Narsh. ‘Based on that information, we began an investigation.?
Police were able to gather enough evidence to obtain a warrant for Huffmaster for filing a false police report. Because Huffmaster reported a felony-level crime, he will face felony charges himself.
Though the bench warrant was mailed to the defendant’s home, Huffmaster failed to turn himself into authorities.
Then, on April 17, LOPD received a call from a sporting goods store in Rochester. There, Huffmaster was attempting to purchase a gun and his outstanding warrant showed up on the background check.
Police contacted sheriff deputies in Rochester who detained Huffmaster until LOPD officers could arrive.
‘This is a confirmation and validation that the background check system works,? said Narsh. ‘In this instance, the system not only prevented a firearm sale but allowed police to catch a suspect.?
Huffmaster is currently out on bond awaiting a hearing.
