Ubbing expects more from Brandon golfers this season

Brandon’s boys golf team, many of whom are coming off their first year of varsity experience, started the season in competitive fashion.
The Blackhawks placed ninth out of 22 teams at the Durand Invitational Aug. 11 at Willowbrook Golf Course in Byron.
Junior Will Hubbard led the Blackhawks by shooting a round of 82. Freshman Ryan Bilkos, in his first varsity match, contributed an 87, followed by juniors Matt Miller (88) and Jeff Carroll (89).
As the Blackhawks gear up for the opening Flint Metro League tournament Monday, Aug. 16 at Sugarbush Golf Course in Davison, Brandon coach John Ubbing said his team still has some room for growth.
‘We’re still relatively young ? we had mostly sophomores last year,? he said.
He also said Bilkos? addition this year will give the Blackhawks a spark this year. ‘We’ll potentially have this kid to push the others to do better,? Ubbing said.
Ubbing, in his second year coaching the Brandon varsity, said he expects a more competitive team this year.
‘If we can go from seventh to fourth (in the Flint Metro), I think that’s a realistic expectation,? he said. ‘I told my kids there’s no excuses this year.?
Ubbing also said he expects Fenton, Lapeer West, and Linden to be the top teams in the league this season.
