Clarkston Varsity Softball was ready to go for their season opener last Thursday and it showed as they defeated Troy Athens, 13-3.
“They were excited,” said Katie Smith, head coach. “They have had a countdown.”
The Wolves scored their first run at the bottom of the first inning off a double from Keira Tolmie to bring Cady in, who also had a double on her hit.
During the second inning, they boosted their lead with four more runs and by the end of the third inning they were leading, 6-0.
Clarkston continued to build their lead in the fourth inning with four more runs.
“Every girl contributed,” said Smith. “It’s a coach’s dream that you put in any girl at any time. She knows what to do and gets her job done. It was our first game and I was just very happy it was a complete team win.
She added she was happy the players showed up on offense and defense.
“I think that sometimes you might miss part of the game,” said Smith. “I thought our defense was very strong on the hits they did have, and we made adjustments at the plate. Overall just having a sound game.”
She shared what also helped is having a large group of returners and they had enough practices to get ready.
“Everyone knew coming into here we had a job and knew every working part of that job. I think that was very beneficial for us because every one came in very prepared.”
The Wolves opened the week with a double header against North Farmington on Tuesday.
“We got the first game nerves out,” said Smith. “They are ready to compete so that’s our goal every day is just to compete. They showed me in practice they are physically ready. They just have to bring their mental game.”
They host Lake Orion on Thursday and head to Stoney Creek on Tuesday, May 2. Both games start at 4:30 p.m.
“It is day by day,” Smith said. “They don’t get intimidated by anything. They know if they just show up and whoever is on the other side of the field they will bring their best game. They are excited.”
