25 years ago – 1998
New president invites others to join the Friends: Since Laurie Stern, a 23-year Clarkston resident, became president of Friends of the Independence Township Library. Since she joined 3-4 years prior, membership had skyrocketed. “We have added wonderful people who are really devoted who are real devoted to seeing our group grow,” she said.
Family pooh-poohs the big 4-0: When Kevin Fangel arrived home, on Dvorak in Independence Township, he was greeted by quite a spectacle in his front yard. There to greet him were legions of cardboard Winnie the Poohs and a big sign that read: “Kevin Fangel’s 40-Pooh!”
Icers start playoffs on strong note: After two weeks off, Clarkston Hockey dominated on the ice and on the scoreboard in the first round of district playoffs. They shut out Waterford Mott by a score of 8-0 at the Flint IMA Arena.

50 years ago – 1973
Developer asks approval for 43 acres of multiples: Hubert Garner, of Farmington, who was proposing development of Deer Lake Woods on 372 acres at the north end of Deer Lake was seeking approval from the Independence Township Planning Commission for 43 acres of multiple living units on land within the area which was zoned for that purpose.
Sashabaw takes Clarkston in overtime: The Sashabaw Junior High School Cougars final game of the regular season saw them as the guests of the Clarkston Junior High School Wolverines. It was a close game and went into a 3-minute overtime. The Cougars prevailed, with a 44-40 score, for their 12th win of the season.
Springing up: About 15 boys and their dads from Cub Scout Pack 133 went to Big Lake on Sunday for an ice fishing contest. After several dozen donuts and two and a half gallons of hot chocolate, the boys who caught the fish were Aaron Strine with 11, and Mark Sommers with one.

75 years ago – 1948
Students presented in recital: A lovely, informal piano recital was held in the studio of Mrs. Charles Matthews on Wednesday evening when she presented her students to their parents and a few friends.
Farm group met Wednesday: The local Farm Bureau met on Wednesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Clark on the Snader farm on Sashabaw Road. The topic for discussion was “How can our marketing facilities be improved?”
The Hilltopper: In first grade news, students had become very interested in the farm. The characters in their readers had been visiting grandmother and grandfather at the farm. They also learned a song. They carried the farm idea into their art and had been drawing barns, animals and farm scenes
