25 years ago – 1998
Road woes halt subdivision plans: Road problems caused a roadblock for a proposed new subdivision west of Dartmouth, between Indianwood and Oakhill roads. The Independence Township Planning Commission unanimously approved a special land use/cluster option for the site, which rested on a former gravel quarry. However commissioners tabled Trinity Land Development’s second request for conceptual site plan approval, agreeing they needed to set up a special subcommittee after wrestling with several road related topics.
Fall, friends and fun!: It was a full house at Independence Oaks as folks took part in one of Michigan’s greatest annual events – autumn. Grade-school kids and their grown-up friends gathered at the nature center for an afternoon full of crafts, demonstrations and nature hikes.
CHS cheerleaders make ‘all-state team’: CHEER! Michigan selected its first All-State team and Clarkston High School was well represented in the group. Michelle Wilson and Susan Vagts were named to the 22-member squad, and besides four girls from Sterling Heights High School, were the only teammates to make the team. The team planned to perform at the Cheerleaders of America national competition in March, an exhibition scheduled to be telecasted on ESPN.

50 years ago – 1973
Homecoming 1973 celebrations: For the Clarkston High School Homecoming, sophomore opted for a balloon for their float in the parade. Juniors had a covered wagon to win first place, and the seniors had a little red schoolhouse
CHS girl cagers 5-0: Clarkston’s girls basketball teams returned home victorious over Lake Orion. The varsity team faced a much taller team from Lake Orion but came out on top with a 49-24 win. Nancy Foster and Laurie Miller led with ten points each. The JV team had a slow start but finished with a 27-8 win. Nancy Chartier led with 12 points.
Springing up: Dennis and Gale Wright of Andersonville Road gave an “old friend” party on Saturday night. Gale said, “there was no special occasion, just a get together with some old friends.” After dinner, everyone went to Electric Crater in Holly.

75 years ago – 1948
P.T.A. hears a good musical program: The Clarkston P.T.A. met on Wednesday evening at the school for their first business meeting of the year. A fine musical program was presented by the Mother Singers of Drayton Plains. Mrs. J.R. Berryman played the piano accompaniment. The sixth grade room mothers served refreshments for a table in the Halloween motif.
‘Frozen foods’ to be a lesson subject: The Clarkston Home Extension Club planned to meet at the home of Mrs. Bradley Miller on Oct. 28. The interesting lesson on “Frozen Foods” would be presented by Mrs. William Edgar and Mrs. George Perry.
Clarkston locals: J. L. Waterbury and son, Jim, left for South Dakota on Tuesday morning. They expected to have a grand time hunting small game and return in about ten days.
