WATERFORD — Clarkston Varsity Wrestling took down the competition last week to claim their 18th team district championship and qualified ten wrestlers to move on to the regional round.
The Wolves opened last week winning the MHSAA Division 1 District 107 on Wednesday at Waterford Kettering with a 55-15 win over Lake Orion and a 67-9 win over the Captains.
“We wrestled well,” said Brian Gibbs, head coach. “We have been training hard the last couple of weeks. I think it brought out a lot more fight in our guys. It was good to see. We got some people in the line up and they stepped up.”
He added it’s been engrained in the team for district success.
“We have high goals, high expectations to win a team title,” Gibbs said. “You can’t do that without winning the district. We expect to win. Not in a cocky way, but in a confident way. As long as we have the expectations of going out there and performing and executing, the results will handle themselves.”
Clarkston opened the night against Lake Orion in the district semifinal.
Dragon Payton McIntyre opened the dual with a 12-9 win in the 190-pound weight class match.
Clarkston took the next four weight classes as Brock Trevino (215) had a fall in the first period over Alex Russell; Camden Neumann (285) had a fall in the second period over Leo Cassel; Gavin Culloty (106) had a 11-0 victory over Chad Parker; and Tyler Le (113) had a 6-0 win over Christopher Whitman.
“It was nice to see Cam go out, get a win and get a pin,” said Gibbs.
Lake Orion took the win in the 120-pound weight class and the Wolves followed it winning five weight classes with falls from Preston Lefevre (126), Archer Anderson (132), Ayden Mutter (138), Marco Marino (144) and Maxim Brown (150). Micah Minot (165) had a void for his match.
The Wolves opened their dual over Waterford Kettering with a fall by Trevino 20 seconds into the second period over Camren Taylor.
Clarkston would continue to earn big points over the Captains with falls from Culloty, Mitchell Murray (120), Anderson (126), Lefevre (132), Mutter, Gerald Setter (165) and Tony Cach (190).
“It’s nice to see Mitch get a fall as a senior in the post season,” said Gibbs. “He is someone who stepped up.”
Marino had a 12-1 major decision win and Matteo Marino (175) had a 12-6 win. Neumann and Le had voids in their weight class.
“Preston and Archer bumped up in weight classes,” said Gibbes. “Both had pretty good kids and both got falls in both matches. It’s good to see that. Then, good to see Tony bounce back in the second dual meet with a fall.”
Clarkston had 14 compete in the MHSAA Division 1 Individual District 2 on Saturday. Ten finished in top four to move on to the regional competition.
Culloty (106), Lefevre (120) and Trevino (190) finished as champions in their respective weight classes.
Anderson (120), Nate Carter (132) and Matteo Marino (165) finished in second place. Le (113), Setter (165) and Neumann (285) finished in third place and Marco Marino (144) in fourth place.
Clarkston competes against Farmington in the MHSAA Division 1 Team Regional 102 semifinal today, Wednesday, Feb. 14 at home, 5:30 p.m. The winner takes on the Hartland/West Bloomfield winner in the final at 7 p.m.
The Wolves head to Lapeer for the MHSAA Division 1 Individual Regional 1 on Saturday. The Wolves also compete in the MHSAA Division 1 Girls Individual Regional on Sunday.
