25 years ago – 1999
Springfield okays residential rezoning of Ellis property: Rezoning of the Ellis family property at Dixie Highway near Davisburg Road was partially completed. The Springfield Township Board of Trustees agreed to developer Tim Birtsas’ request to rezone the residential portion of the property and table the second reading of the commercial rezoning to the June meeting.
He’s a ‘sweet’ kid: Clarkston High School freshman Sam Stapp was doing a good deed in a sweet way. As owner of Tidal Wave Candy Sales, he kept businesses stocked with nibbles for their employees and customers. He also donated a portion of the proceeds from his vending machines to Baldwin Church and Center of Pontiac. Stapp said he received the vending machines from a family member who never used them.
Girls runners-up: The Wolves hosted the 12th annual Clarkston Girls Track Invitational and were very close to keeping the trophy at home. The Wolves finished in second place at the meet with 77 points, one behind Detroit Renaissance. “There were a couple of places we could have done better, but overall we ran well,” said Coach Gordie Richardson.
50 years ago – 1974
Mother’s Day tree: In honor of their mothers, kindergartners at North Sashabaw Elementary planted four flowering crabapple trees. The planting ceremony was followed by a program and a party in the classroom.
Bailey Lake parents object: Some 50 Walters Lake area parents, whose children were at the time attending Bailey Lake School, protested Monday night to the Clarkston Board of Education about the district’s plans to move their children to Sashabaw schools. They saw the issue tabled until the July meeting, after the board would have more indication from the June millage vote and teacher salary negotiations.
The mill stream: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kidd and daughter, Bobbi Jo, of Shelly Drive traveled to Mount Pleasant for their son’s graduation. Ray, their son, received his degree in education from Central Michigan University. Ray’s aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Doug Thompson and daughters, Denise and Wendy, traveled with the Kidds to be with Ray on graduation.
75 years ago – 1949
Large crowd at music festival: The school auditorium was filled to capacity when the school presented its May Festival under the direction William Ladd, music instructor. The theme of the program was rhythm. The program opened with a couple of numbers by the school band and a parade of the Baton Twirlers.
Garden Club to start civic project: The Clarkston Farm and Garden Club met at the home of Mrs. John H. Keller on Davisburg Road. The local club was interested in a civic project in which their goal would be a beautification approach to Clarkston from the south. Their aim was to landscape along the highway from U.S. 10 to the southern village limits with aid from the State Highway Department.
The Hilltopper: In the seventh grade arithmetic class, they were learning how to pay gas and electric bills and also how to read the gas and electric meters. In science, seventh graders had some good reports on blood plasma and how it helps the hospitals.
