25 years ago – 1999
Board puts car perk decision in neutral: Independence Township officials, driven to solve a car perk option, wound up spinning their wheels at the June 1 board meeting. The matter was eventually tabled after a lengthy discussion and several failed motions. At the time, the policy stated the three full-time elected officials could have leased cars for either business or personal use, but could not take them on vacation or out of state.
Keeping Clarkston green – and free of trash: The Sashabaw Middle School sixth grade team 6A, a.ka. Storm Chasers, became trashchasers for a good cause. The 100 students, team teachers Kerri Gualtieri, Kathy Cromwell, Jackie Hoisington and Tim Kaul, plus parent volunteers, cleared 53 bags of trash from a two-mile stretch of Maybee and Sashabaw roads for a community service project.
Distance runners place at states for Wolves: The Clarkston Boys and Girls Track teams sent a solid group of distance runners to the Class A State Track Meet and brought home a little hardware from the trip. The girls 3,200-meter relay team with Jennifer Rooding, Nicole Fischer, Lissa Lukens and Rachel Uchman finished in fifth place with a personal best time of 9:33. David Sage finished in fifth place in the 3,200-meter run, 9:35.64.

50 years ago – 1974
Balloon lands: Cloud 9, a hot air balloon which took off Monday night from I-75 and Sashabaw Road, flew over Pine Knob, landed again at Clarkston Road and Almond Lane, then flew back across the expressway before being packed and taken home by owner Jim Luber of Orchard Lake. It caused a lot of excitement for area residents.
Cougars retain All-Sports trophy: In a twice postponed game due to inclement weather, the Sashabaw Middle School Cougars’ freshman baseball team entertained and defeated their arch rivals from Clarkston Junior High. With each school having won four sports events, the winner of the baseball game would claim the All-Sports trophy for the year. The Cougars won the game and the trophy, 9-1.
The mill stream: Looking forward to a career as a professional potter, Chris Anthony was planning to attend the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit after graduating from the Leelanau School in Glen Arbor. Chris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Anthony of Buffalo Street, was a member of soccer, track and skiing teams at the college preparatory school.

75 years ago – 1949
School proposed gets approval: The proposed reorganization of the Clarkston area into one school district comprising of the present areas of Bigelow, Clarkston Station, Hunter and Springfield was approved by the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The proposal of the proposed reorganization would be determined by voters, tentatively planned for July 7.
Personal shower honors local girl: Miss Ida M. Beattie entertained at her home on South Main Street a personal shower honoring Alene Richardson, who would become the bride of John Ronk on June 25. Sixteen enjoyed the evening playing games and presenting the honoree with many beautiful gifts. Dainty refreshments were served.
The Hilltopper: In fifth grade news, the class was glad to have Skippy Bigelow visit. The students finished all of their books and workbooks and had their tests. On Monday, they would get their books ready to sell and their room in order. On Tuesday, they were planning on a tour of the zoo.
