The Oxford Girls Basketball Team won their first game of the season 53-48 on Sept. 11 against Birmingham Groves High School.
The Lady Cats led the game off strong with 13 points to Birmingham’s six at the end of the first. By the half, Oxford had doubled their points, but Birmingham still managed to out shoot the ladies 15 to 13. The Wildcats regrouped in the third period and held strong to squeeze out the win.
Several Oxford players scored in the double digits for the night. Top scorer was Kacey Cookingham with 13 points. She went three for four on the line and had 17 rebounds. Team Captain Ally Zonsius followed closely behind with 12 points, including five field goals. She also contributed six rebounds, four steals and two assists during the night. Megan Stumph shot 11 points of her own which included two 3-pointers. She also had 10 rebounds, two steals and four blocked shots.
Rounding out the points for Oxford were Kelsey Oliver and Vanessa Collier. Oliver had eight points, three steals and four assists. Collier had seven points, seven rebounds, five steals and two assists.
The victory followed Oxford’s devastating loss at home to Goodrich on Sept. 9.
In league action, the Lady Wildcats played their first game on September 14 against Lapeer West. The Panthers dominated the court 55-36.
High scorers for Oxford included Collier with 12 points (including four field goals and going four for six on the line) and Cookingham with nine points (including four field goals and going one for two on the line).
The ladies stood 0-1 in the league as they played their second FML match-up on Tuesday night against the Fenton Tigers. They hit the court again on Thursday, Sept. 23, in non-league competition against Romeo and return to league action against Linden on Sept. 28. The varsity team stands 1-5 overall.
