Cameron Stefanski wants to be an actor when he grows up. As a sixth grader at Clarkston Middle School, he’s working on that goal right now.
Stefanski will take the stage at the Masonic Temple this week as part of the children’s choir in the touring production of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,? lead by popular singer Jon Secada.
More than 100 kids tried out to be part of the 32-member children’s choir. The role requires a great deal of backup singing and dancing.
‘I’ve done this show before, so I’m pretty used to it,? Stefanski said. ‘I’ll be on stage the whole time.?
Participating in ‘Camp Broadway? this summer at the Music Hall in Detroit led Stefanski to meet the show’s casting director and, in turn, he found out about the audition. Stefanski showed off his dancing and singing skills to gain the role.
‘It was really weird because they said it (audition) could take four to seven hours,? Stefanski said. ‘I was like, ‘Whoa. I’ve never been to one that long.??
While the production is a big endeavor, Stefanski attended only four rehearsals to prepare for opening night. The show opened Oct. 5 in Detroit.
‘It’s more professional,? Stefanski said. ‘They’re only here a little bit and then they go.?
Once he found about his role in the well-known musical, everyone around Stefanski knew his good news. Many of his family members, friends and teachers planned on attending one of the show’s performances.
Stefanski has been acting in plays since age 8. He can be found working with the Avon Players in Rochester, where he actually first performed ‘Joseph.? Stefanksi hopes to keep acting and turn his love into a career when he grows up.
‘I want to be on Broadway and do West End shows in London,? Stefanski said. ‘I think it would be cool to go over there and do that.?
When not on the stage, Stefanski is a member of the student council at CMS and the cross country club.
‘It’s hectic,? Stefanski said.
Part of the show’s excitement is a cast party for all involved with the production, an event Stefanski is looking forward to.
‘You get to meet all these famous people,? Stefanski said. ‘I think it’ll be fun.?
For Stefanski, the biggest thrill of performing with a nationally touring show is just being involved.
‘It’s really going to be a lot of fun. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance at a big theater,? Stefanski said. ‘You don’t get to see a kid get into a big Detroit theater everyday.?
