Unbeaten string ends for Goodrich girls cagers

The Goodrich girls basketball team experienced something new this season in its Oct. 12 game against New Lothrop ? a loss.
The Martians were victimized by nine three-point shots, including seven from Rachel White, as the host Hornets defeated Goodrich 70-48 in a Genesee Area Conference crossover game. Goodrich is now 10-1 overall and 7-1 in the GAC Red Division.
New Lothrop (8-2, 6-1 GAC Blue Division) attacked from the outset, outscoring the Martians 20-7 in the first quarter. Goodrich never recovered from that outburst, as New Lothrop used the one-two punch of White (27 points) and Ashley Wendling (25 points) to defeat the Martians.
Goodrich coach Jason Gray said the Martians struggled at both ends of the floor during the opening stanza.
‘They hit a couple of shots and we didn’t do a good job defensively,? he said. ‘We missed some shots we normally made, and that didn’t help us, either.?
Seniors Julie Owen and Maribeth Barns led the Martians with 11 points apiece, while Autumn Haggadone added 10 points.
New Lothrop shut down Goodrich junior Nykole Pfaff, the Martians? leading scorer, who was held to three points in the game.
‘They really made sure they knew where she was at all times,? Gray said. ‘They frustrated all of us, not just Nykole.?
In another GAC crossover game Oct. 7, the Martians had no problem defeating visiting Genesee 69-17. Goodrich outscored the Wolves 21-3 in the first quarter and never looked back.
Owen paced the Martians with 11 points, while Pfaff and Kortni Elsworth each added nine points.
