Girl Scouts makes service a ritual

The Girl Scout promise is to serve God, their country and help people at all times. Clarkston Girl Scouts are living by the promise- spreading love and participation through out the community.
Involvement is number one to these girls. Over the years, the Girl Scouts have cleaned up library grounds, and helped the elderly play bingo in the Alzheimer’s unit at Lourdes Nursing Home.
This year, the girls made birthday bags aimed toward 10-12 year old girls. With only an hour and a half and a budget, the girls did plenty of hands on preparation. They filled the bags with cake mix, frosting, gifts and a card.
‘This activity taught the girls to handle money, look at the value of goods and feel great about donating to the community,? said Donna Bur, Junior Girl Scout Leader. ‘They loved the project.?
The community service program trains the girls to understand the value of their resources. They also learn to value diversity, be open to new challenges and skills taught by others, and develop leadership skills.
The Girl Scout organization emphasizes community service. Each year, members of the program choose a new and different project to help the community.
‘This year, we decided to help the Lighthouse with the birthday bags,? said Bur.
In order to start the project, members had to decide what would be purchased and where. With a one hour time slot, the members went shopping and bought the necessary products. Then, the bags were delivered to the Lighthouse where the girls received a tour.
This project taught the girls how to budget and the value of a dollar.
‘This project made the girls feel wonderful knowing that a little girl their age would have a nice birthday because of the bags,? said Bur.
‘I think the Girls Scout program is excellent. They work hard to train the leaders and give them the necessary resources to work with the girls.?
