Garman excels for Martians in league, tournament action

In a hard-fought match, the Goodrich varsity volleyball team dropped its first Genesee Area Conference matchup of the year Jan. 10.
The visiting Martians dropped a tight contest to Byron 25-18, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23. Goodrich’s record is now 7-9-1 overall and 1-1 in GAC Red competition.
Tara Garman anchored the middle for Goodrich with 21 kills and 11 blocks, while Alyssa Bertrand served up five aces, dished out 65 assists and was 86-for-87 setting, and Julie Owen contributed 14 digs and seven kills.
The Martians fell just short of a berth in the finals at the Flushing Invitational Jan. 8, bowing out in the semifinals against the eventual tournament champion Flushing Raiders, losing 26-27, 25-15, 8-15.
Garman was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance. During the tournament, she was 45-for-48 serving with eight aces, as well as 24-for-24 passing and 81-for-91 attacking. She also had 38 kills, 15 blocks and 32 digs.
Also contributing to the Goodrich cause were Owen (41-for-49 serving, 10 aces, 46-for-48 attacking, 11 kills and 55 digs), and Bertrand (45-for-48 serving, nine aces, 153-for-155 setting with 65 assists, and 18 digs).
